Where we stand in FP

Last week we started to film for our showcase documentary project for factual production. We filmed three venues like restaurants and we visited the docks as well. We also finished our storyboard which we can now use to get a real feel to the video. A few venues are still missing on our list but i think we are on good track to completing filming. Furthermore, we discussed how we are going to edit it all and our solution is probably going to be that we all edit two venues and a part of the interview so the work is divided well. In discussing this i thought about the risk in this workflow because it is very probable that we have different types of editing styles so i suggested that we work in the same room and talk to each other in the process instead of everyone working on their own and then having to solve problems afterwards.

Here is the list of filming styles we used while at the venues:

  • a lot of depth of field, shift of focus
  • wide shots, close ups, ultra closeups – detail shots.
  • atmospheric shots
  • slow motion
  • all in all a cinematic look

Anyway, Leo and I developed a workflow in the venues and soon realised how quickly we learn and work as a team incredibly well as we’re on the same page all the time. But not to forget is that variety and creativity when shooting because there are always new possibilities. On the first shoot we got to know the type of cinematic filming we would be doing and started to get a feel for it. Then we discovered how to be quicker and more efficient in our working process.

All in all I think we are in good shape at the moment, I wish there was more enthusiasm and initiative taken by the other group members but Leo and I are doing a good job. We know have to figure the last venues out and sort the interview we still have to film which will be the hardest part of the documentary.

  1. I missed this last week but it is good you are recording everything in your blog. Keep doing this during the coming few days as it will be a busy time and it could be easy to forget. The next ambition for you will be to tie theory to your practice and your conclusions in the critical reflection: books, theorists, practitioners etc.etc.
